Building a resilient health system in Nepal

The 2015 earthquake in Nepal had a profound effect on the country’s infrastructure, including its health system which fought to provide emergency care while delivering routine services. The earthquake was just one such shock to hit the country. Other natural disasters, armed conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic and socio-economic crises also have major impacts on an already fragile health system.

This video was produced by the HERD International team. It outlines the shocks Nepal is prey to, describes how health systems might respond to such crises, and how fragile states’ health systems must learn to become resilient if they are to weather future events. HERD International’s ReBUILD for Resilience studies aim to identify the strategies and capacities that will enable health systems to do just that.
